Reishi, in Latin Ganoderma lucidum, is one of the most famous medicinal fungi. It has been part of traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, where it serves as a remedy for a wide range of diseases. Its spectrum of positive effects is really wide, has a complex effect on the whole organism and is thus rightly called a fungus of longevity or immortality.

The fungus belongs to the family Ganodermataceae, where we can find more than 210 different species. Its fruiting bodies are semicircular in shape, reaching a diameter of about 10 cm in diameter and are typical of their glossy surface.

HISTORY

Reishi is one of the oldest natural remedies. For more than 3,000 years, it has been the most sought-after commodity to support vital functions, vitality, immunity, and longevity. The first ancient botanical texts originating from China literally describe that by regular consumption of the Reishi mushroom one becomes immortal.

The fungus was known in particular in Asia, primarily in China and Japan. It served as an important means of traditional medicine, helping to cure even very serious diseases. No wonder it was a much sought after commodity. It was therefore the privilege of the imperial families who used it as a life-giving elixir.

CHEMISTRY

Reishi contains a high amount of bioactive substances, which makes it a unique remedy. We can find here a high amount of polysaccharides, beta-glucans, ganoderans, steroids, triterpenes – ganoderic acid, lanostanes. The fungus is also a source of fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and building elements such as zinc, copper, calcium and more.

EFFECTS

The effects of Reishi in our Western society are still talked with considerable reserve. The reason is probably the lack of scientific studies to confirm what Asian culture has known for centuries. However, Reishi is one of the most studied natural medicine on the planet.

Asian medicine has been using Reishi for centuries as a substitute for conventional pharmaceuticals. It is known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is therefore used in the treatment of auto-immune disorders, eg as prevention and supportive agent in the treatment of cancer. Recent scientific studies also agree that Reishi can be considered a remedy that has a complex effect on the whole organism. It supports the immune system, harmonizes the functions of individual organ systems and contributes to the proper functioning of the circulatory system.

However, the fungus was not used only for its medicinal properties. For its calming and relaxing effects, it was used, for example, in Taoist monasteries as a meditative means. Thanks to these effects it also helps to induce a peaceful and deep sleep and is thus used as a remedy for sleep disorders.
