Theobroma cacao – a gift from the gods
The cacao tree (lat. Theobroma cacao) is an evergreen tree native to South America. Its seeds – cacao beans – have been valued by mankind for thousands of years. They are used to make cacao, high-quality chocolate, and ceremonial cacao, which retains most of the nutrients and plant intelligence from this sacred tree.
The combination of caffeine and theobromine provides the body with a gentle, stable boost. Amino acids and neuroactive substances such as tryptophan and anandamide promote good mood, creativity, and cognitive function. It is therefore no surprise that cacao, with its heart-opening qualities that promote empathy, gratitude, and a deeper sense of belonging, is considered a true superfood for the body, mind, and spirit.

Flavor profile
Arriba cocoa beans have a refined floral flavor, mild bitterness, and a certain delicacy. Dominant aromas may include notes of jasmine, violets, or lavender. Unlike some more bitter cacao varieties, Arriba has a bitterness that does not mask the delicate, sweet flavor of the beans. Overall, it offers a rich and complex taste experience.

Ecuador's national treasure – the exceptional Arriba Nacional
Ecuador is the second smallest country in South America, yet it is a land of many contrasts and beautiful unspoiled nature. Few places in the world offer such biodiversity in such a small area. The breathtaking natural beauty of the many national parks is balanced by rich cultural experiences from local monuments and visits to indigenous Indian communities. And just as this small country is unique, so is our cacao , which comes directly from the heart of Ecuador.
The Arriba variety is one of the most prized cacao varieties cacao the world. The beans, which come from sacred trees in the Ecuadorian rainforest, have exceptional aromatic properties that have earned them a reputation over centuries. The Spanish word arriba can be literally translated as "higher" or "upstream." The name refers to the region where these cacao fruits originate. They are grown on the banks of the Guayas River in the province of Esmeraldas, located upstream from the port city of Guayaquil. Interestingly, the Arriba designation is not associated with any specific botanical variety; in fact, the cacao beans can come from different subspecies of cacao trees. The name is used to distinguish them from those grown in other regions due to their distinctive flavor characteristics. Ecuadorian farmers grow this variety of cacao trees because of its traditional significance and quality.
Conexión Chocolate Ecuador
Conexión Chocolate is an Ecuadorian initiative that combines the traditional knowledge of local farmers with a modern, ethical approach to growing and processing cacao. Its goal is to protect the native Arriba Nacional variety and support small farmers through education and organic farming.
Conexión works with approximately 2,000 farmers in the provinces of Los Ríos, Manabí, and Esmeraldas. Cacao processed exclusively on site so that maximum value remains in the region of origin and supports local communities. The cacao beans are carefully fermented and dried under the Ecuadorian sun before being ground into pure cacao mass – without roasting and without any additional ingredients. This gentle processing preserves the entire nutritional spectrum cacao: high antioxidant content, minerals such as magnesium, iron, and zinc, theobromine, tryptophan (mood and energy booster), and the neurotransmitter anandamide, otherwise known as the "bliss molecule."
The emphasis on mixed cultivation, direct Shop respect for nature is reflected not only in the quality of cacao itself, but also in its taste, energy, and story. Each cacao thus bears the imprint of the landscape, the people, and the intention with which it was created.
