Guayusa, Latin Ilex guayusa, is a traditional Amazon plant whose leaves are used to prepare a highly energizing drink. It belongs to the same family as the popular Yerba mate, but it contains much more health-promoting substances and thus has even more beneficial effects on our body. There is, of course, caffeine, which amount is similar to coffee. Unlike coffee, however, it is released gradually, causing long-lasting stimulation without discomfort. Another interesting ingredient is theobromine, a compound known for its euphoric and aphrodisiac effects, also found in cocoa beans.
The plant is similar in its content of active ingredients to green tea. It contains l-theanine, which relaxes the body and reduces anxiety. There is also a large number of antioxidants that promote immunity and slow down aging processes. The prepared drink is dark brown and its specific bitter earthy taste with slightly caramel undertones cannot be confused with anything.
Preparation:
Cook 1 to 2 tablespoon of Guayusa in the form of crushed leaves over low heat in 400 ml of water for 8 minutes. Drain the resulting drink. At least two infusions may be prepared.
