Guayusa Black – crushed leaves

The dark form of Ecuadorian Gayusa is obtained by the traditional method of collection and drying. There is a slight fermentation that gives the beverage a characteristic taste and color. The drink is dark in color, with a bitter earthy taste and a slightly chocolate undertone.

CURRENCY:

Guayusa, Latin Ilex guayusa, is a traditional Amazonian plant, the leaves of which are used for the preparation of a highly energizing drink. It belongs to the same family as the popular Yerba maté, but it contains a much greater amount of health-promoting substances and thus has even more beneficial effects on our organism. We can find, of course, caffeine, which is found here to a similar extent as in coffee. Unlike coffee, however, it is released gradually, causing long-lasting stimulation without unpleasant bodily sensations. Another interesting ingredient is the substance theobromine, a compound known for its euphoric and aphrodisiac effects, which is also found in cocoa beans.

The plant is similar in its content of active ingredients to green tea. It contains l-theanine, which relaxes the body and reduces anxiety. There is also a large number of antioxidants that promote immunity and slow down aging processes. The prepared drink is dark brown and its specific bitter earthy taste with slightly caramel undertones cannot be confused with anything.

Preparation:

Cook 1 to 2 tablespoon of Guayusa in the form of crushed leaves over low heat in 400 ml of water for 8 minutes. Drain the resulting drink. At least two infusions may be prepared.

Very similar to yerba mate. It tastes a little different (personally, I like it more than maté) and feels stronger (but it can be subjective). I also tried to prepare as a maté (pouring new water over and over again in small doses and drinking directly through the bombilla) and I find it more practical than boiling it once, although it will probably not be the traditionally correct procedure. I definitely recommend giving it a try. For me, it's absolutely great for concentration and mentally demanding work.
